Fridges And Freezers Are Treated Differently

Anything with a cooling circuit holds refrigerant gases, and the insulating foam inside the walls holds blowing agents too. Both have to be recovered at a permitted treatment facility before the unit is shredded, which is why a fridge cannot simply go in with general waste.

We collect the unit whole and hand it over intact for that treatment. We do not degas anything ourselves and we would not try to. Please leave the pipework and compressor alone, and be wary of anyone offering to take a fridge off your hands for scrap. Venting those gases is an offence, and the appliance stays your responsibility until it reaches somebody who handles it properly.

How WEEE Disposal Works

Waste electricals are regulated separately from everything else we collect, and for good reason.

Kept Apart On The Van

Appliances are loaded separately from furniture and general waste rather than crushed in with everything else.

Permitted Treatment

Everything goes to a facility permitted to handle waste electricals, where the hazardous parts come out first.

Materials Recovered

Steel, copper, aluminium and plastics are separated and sold back into manufacturing.

Or Ask Your Retailer

Buying a replacement? Retailers are obliged to help you dispose of the old one. If that is easier and cheaper, take it.

Before We Arrive

None of this is complicated, but a defrosted freezer and a disconnected machine turn a fiddly job into a five minute one. We handle the pulling out and the carrying.

Appliance Disposal Questions

Yes. They are collected whole and handed over to a facility permitted to recover the refrigerant gases and foam before the unit is shredded. We do not degas anything ourselves, and nobody collecting a fridge in a van should be.

We will unplug a machine and pull it out from under the worktop. What we will not do is touch gas connections or hardwired electrics, or cut into plumbing. Have a qualified plumber or electrician isolate those first and we will do the rest.

No. Broken, leaking and long dead appliances are collected just the same. It makes no difference to the price, since either way it is going for material recovery rather than resale.

Yes. Fridge freezers and washing machines are heavy and awkward rather than impossible. Tell us the floor when you book so the right number of people turn up.

It can be. When you buy a replacement, retailers are obliged to help you dispose of the old appliance, and some collect it when they deliver. If that suits you, use it. We are the better option when there is no replacement coming, the timing does not line up, or you have several appliances to clear at once.
